My wife and I went round the house a month ago and thought that the Benaki had done a great job. We were shown around a year ago while it was being restored (when all the furniture and books had been removed) but it now looks lived in again – the highlight of my holiday. I could have spent all day looking at the books.
Thanks so much for these – from Australia
Thank you for this Tom. What a relief to see it so beautifully and sensitively restored. Twinges of sadness as I recall how it was when I visited, so much more full of character with the jumble of their personal treasures and momentos, threadworn stripey local fabrics and rugs everywhere. I regret to see it ‘smartened’ but this had to be done, and it looks as though the simple and beautiful spirit of the place has been preserved. Hats off to all concerned. The poignancy is balanced by the thought that it will be used and shared and cared for as Paddy and Joan wished and will take on a new life supporting fresh creativity.
Completely agree with Helen Anderson.
Thank you! 🙂
You’re welcome‼️ 😉
Agree with all of that Helen. They have done a good job in the end. And it did have to be “smartened up”. I suppose it is not a museum, but meant to be lived in and functional (as well as comfortable), and that is the difference. I may visit once more but I’m not entirely sure if I shall. Certainly not to make a special trip. Something will have been lost in the process.
I caught a glimpse of Paddy at Joan’s bedroom window once when I was swimming there; I treasure that memory, and I also really value those interior shots you took on your visit Tom, before renovation, as well as those of others taken in the past. Think the shades of Paddy and Joan will always be there…spirit of place.
Thank you for these lovely photos. I dream of visiting some day soon. A beautiful restoration with updated modern conveniences. Are stats there limited to Professional writers? How does one go about booking a room for a couple of nights?
Thank you for doing this. I would love one day to see it in person.
Thank you so much. A great job, but still so pleased to have seen it as it was.
Is that a huge flat screen tv?
Hope I’m wrong. Or if so, maybe just for the opening to show film of project?
