Dervla Murphy described her visits to Romania in a fine travelogue which bears the somewhat disguised title of ‘Transylvania and Beyond’; I suppose that the latter title is a bit more catchy and marketable than say ‘Romania’. Still, that didn’t stop Sacheverell Sitwell from calling his travelogue written in 1938 ‘Roumanian Journey’. Sitwell’s book contains a few pages of ugly anti-Semitic rant. Yet, I should say that it is not just the finest literary travel book about Romania which I have read, but one of the finest travelogues I have ever read. PLF was influenced by Sitwell, but he never came near to Sitwell’s mature simplicity and stylistic elegance. My OUP 1992 edition of Sitwell’s book contains a foreword by PLF.
