We have all seen the famous 1972 video of Nico Mastorakis’ TV show “This is Your Life” which brought Kreipe and his old enemies together before the cameras. If you have not seen it you can find it here.
In this newly discovered video Nico Mastorakis presents a documentary about the whole kidnap event, and includes full length and exclusive interviews with Paddy and General Kreipe. The General even says that “next year I will spend my holiday in Crete.” I wonder if he ever did?
There is much more about the kidnap in the Video and Audio section. Take a visit now.
Love the music at the end. Anyone know who they are?
What a find! Simply amazing to see and hear Paddy. Thank you, Tom, for posting. But also huge compliments to the makers of this documentary who had the courage to bring these men together.
Amazing vid, thank you SO MUCH
How marvellous to see and hear my Uncle Paddy once again.
Off the subject (sorry), but I’ve sent you photos of PLF’s house taken this May and a small valediction for a friend of Paddy’s who’s died. Is yr BT Internet email working?
Yes John it is. Please do not be concerned. It will appear but I have a big backlog and have been away for most of the last 2 months. I have a settled period when I shall be placing more things on the blog and these will feature. I am just enjoying a beer on the balcony of my hotel in a very hot Cluj before an 0400 flight (UK time!).
All the best.
Where the heck do you find this stuff Tom. Brilliant
PS Is Nico Mastorakis still alive?
It was by complete chance Tim, following an obscure Google search. As far as being alive goes I think perhaps he is, and he could be living in the US. Read his Wikipedia profile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico_Mastorakis . It may be interesting for you to track him down. He is on Facebook so you can send him a message http://www.facebook.com/?ref=tn_tnmn#!/nico.mastorakis if you are registered.
Dear Tom Absolutely Brilliant Video, I met him in Kardamali many years ago, and took a photograph of him, but he had closed his eyes when I clicked the camera. I still have the photograph. Also I would love to know what south coast village he actually took the General to prior to the boat arriving to take him off the Island, he did mention it in the video but it was not clear. I thought it was somewhere near Tsoutsouros, perhaps you might know.
John – thanks for that. The guys who have the best knowledge about the route are to be found at the Ill Met by Moonlight website, Tim and Chris White (who also have made comments here) – best to contact them.
Thank you very much for your reply, I will try what you have suggested.
Tom – this is brilliant!
What a find!
I recently posted on here to Tom regarding what part of Crete was Kreipe taken off the Island and he very kindly said that your or Tim would know what coastal village it was. Therefore, could you point me in the right direction to find this info.
Many thanks in anticipation
Regards John Youde
