“I’ve attached a photograph of Paddy & Joan’s villa at Kalymitsis which I shot from a motor-boat my wife and I had hired on Stoupa beach. I wouldn’t have published it during his life as being too intrusive. He has always seemed to me, whether he be studying, conversing, charming, carousing and now and then writing (John Murray said of him “Paddy is easily distracted”), as a man who “fills the unforgiving minute”. He has been a hero of mine since I was eleven and my dad took us to see “Ill Met by Moonlight” and I was captured by Greece, Rembetico, adventure, and at 68 I’ve a fair few adventures of my own! But, no talent to write alas, and that is the beauty of Paddy’s work that his sense of place and time are made available to us all in angelic prose not to say poetry. “ Howard Patrick

I write from Hungary.
A week ago I’ve got the copy of some pages from the book of Patrick Leigh Fermor: Between The Woods And The Water. Of course from the Hungarian translation. I was told by my mother’s cousin who is living in US and 94 years old that an English traveler visited them in 1934 (she was 14 years old) in Hungary, Gyula is the name of the town. In 2011 May 16 (!) I was in US and browsing the family photos they have. You will not believe as I didn’t – today I was looking the photos I’d taken about those ones and found an original photo of Sir Fermor!!!
How could I upload it???

Many thanks for speedy reply. I saw that info from Lightfire dated January, 2014, that there was a photo of PLF in Hungary found, from his first travel alongside Danube. You asked Lightfire to send a scan, in order to upload it. And then – I couldn’t find the picture. Wasn’t it uploaded at all? There is really so little visual material from the beginning stages of his walk, form the time of the two first volumes of his “trilogy”… I thought it’d be great to see the photo. And maybe – if the owner agrees – to use it in the print?

My father was with Patrick on Crete and was involved in the capture of the General Kriepe
his name was Sargeant Reginald Everson M.M, i have a cutting telling how he made powdered egg for the General and is named in the book “Hide and Seek” by Xan Fielding, and shortly before my mother died she told me that i was named after a friend of Reg’s, my name is Patricia and feel so proud to be named after such a hero, Kind regards Patricia Tustin nee Everson, (we also was at Patricks funeral)

Only a mind so strong and a spirit so culturally enriched as what we find as accomplices in PLF could dream up the notion of a line in the Adriatic Sea where the Filioque drops out of the Credo (yes, I actually read this in one of his books), or that untold sequels to The Road to Oxiana were torpedoed into the deep. Such wonderment.

Hello Helen, My mother-in-law is Beverley Williamson who is an old friend of Patricia’s. Beverly lives in Sydney and recently called Patricia to see about making a visit to Adelaide to see her. The number was disconnected, and I have been trying to see if I could find her on Bev’s behalf. This is the first time I have had any luck. I am writing in the hope of somehow being put in touch with Sir Patrick. My grandfather often spoke of him before he died three years ago. He has several of his books and one signed by Sir Patrick. He was in intelligence during the war. I would love to find out if Sir Patrick remembers him and if he could give us any information regarding him. His name was Major Dennis Machin, sometimes known as Mike, Mick or Mad Mike.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I was browsing this morning in what seems a vain hope of finding out anything more about Mick’s exploits in SOE, and came across your message of last March. Whether you remember me I don’t know, but we met at his Funeral-complaining of our lack of knowledge of his exploits. I was his Nephew-by marrige-as Bobby was my Aunt.
